Deepak Raj Giri Admits Buying Tickets Himself to Save Screenings
Known as the box office 'hit machines' of Nepali cinema, the team of Deepak Raj Giri and Deepashree Niraula faced an unexpected setback with their latest festival release, 'Chha Maya Chhapakkai 2'. Following poor theatrical turnout, actor-producer Deepak Raj Giri publicly accepted full responsibility for the film's commercial failure.
Released on Ashwin 31 for Dashain, the film grossed around Rs 3.5 crore in two weeks—far below their usual benchmark of Rs 7 to 8 crore in the same period. Speaking on a television interview, Giri admitted 98% of the responsibility lies with him, stating that one cannot take credit for hits while shifting blame during a flop.
Giri revealed that just 20 days before shooting, actor Kedar Ghimire ('Magne Boodha') was unable to join the cast due to prior commitments abroad, forcing a last-minute script rewrite and creating creative pressure. While maintaining that a single actor doesn't decide a film's fate, he acknowledged that audiences missed Ghimire in that specific role.
Furthermore, Giri disclosed that he personally purchased a few tickets to keep showtimes active on multiplex booking systems, preventing theaters from dropping screenings. However, he emphasized that he never engaged in mass ticket distribution to inflate numbers artificially.
