Panch Pandav’ Faces Backlash Over ‘Raja Chahiya Chha’ Song, Calls for Boycott Emerge
Nepali film Panch Pandav, which draws inspiration from characters in the Hindu epic Mahabharata, has become the subject of controversy ahead of its release. The backlash intensified after the release of its song ‘Raja Chahiya Chha’ on Friday, with viewers criticizing the portrayal of actress Eva Giri, who plays Draupadi, in a casino dance sequence.
In the Mahabharata, the five sons of Kunti—Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva—are known as the Pandavas. The five characters, traditionally associated with strength, courage and wisdom, have been used as symbolic references in the film directed by Basanta Niraula.
The five Pandavas are portrayed by Hari Bansha Acharya, Aryan Sigdel, Jitu Nepal, Mahesh Tripathi and Sushil Sitaula. Eva Giri plays Draupadi.
A few weeks ago, the production team unveiled a poster introducing the five male actors as the Pandavas and Eva Giri as Draupadi. The film later released another song titled ‘Dajubhai Jasta Hundainan Aru’. Neither release had triggered significant controversy. However, the latest song, ‘Raja Chahiya Chha’, has drawn strong criticism on social media.
In the music video, Eva Giri is seen performing an item dance at a casino in a bold appearance. Hari Bansha Acharya, who plays Yudhishthira, is also shown playing cards and dancing at the casino.Several viewers have objected to the depiction of Draupadi as a bar dancer, arguing that it disrespects a revered character from the Mahabharata and hurts Sanatan religious sentiments. Some social media users have also called for a boycott of the film.
Religious campaigners have joined the criticism. Activist Vedika KC, in a social media post, described the portrayal of Draupadi as a bar dancer as a mockery of Sanatan beliefs. She also called for a boycott of the film.
Responding to the growing criticism, director Basanta Niraula has urged audiences to wait until the film's release before reaching a conclusion. He has clarified that Panch Pandav is not a religious film. According to him, the characters from the Mahabharata have been used as symbolic references to tell a story set in contemporary Nepali society.
Niraula has maintained that the film does not hurt Sanatan religious beliefs. The controversy surrounding the song has brought additional attention to Panch Pandav ahead of its release. Whether the film's full narrative will address the concerns raised by critics remains to be seen.
